How To Stop Setting Goals That Hurt Your Business, And How To Recognize it When You Do

setting goalsSetting goals is extremely important whenever you are trying to achieve a specific result, whether in business or your personal life.  However, most people set goals that are not conducive to their desired results.  As soon as you set out to achieve any endeavor in your business, it’s a wise decision to create goals to help you get there.  Let’s face it, life is extremely busy, and if you don’t have a specific goal, you’re likely to get distracted and veer off your chosen path.  This is where you can get into trouble.

When setting goals it is very important to be realistic.

Yes, of course you want to make $20K per month with your new business, but is this truly realistic after only 3 months?  Have you ever made $20K before?  What’s the most you’ve ever earned in a month? What makes you think you can do it now?  These are just examples of internal questions you should ask yourself when setting a goal.  Being unrealistic is one of the biggest reasons setting goals will hurt your business.  Yes, having great, big goals out there in the universe is good, but if you don’t have an exact plan on how to achieve these overall goals, you’re only going to receive disappointment.

So What’s The Best Way Of Setting Goals To Achieve Your Result?

It’s actually very simple and effective when done correctly.  The best way is to know your final big goal and work backwards.  Taking the example above, if you’re goal is to create $20K per month, where is that money going to come from?  Who’s going to give it to you?  Do you need team members to join your team?  Do you need customers to sell your products too?  If so, HOW are you going to get new team members and customers?  How are you going to get in front of more people to expose your opportunity to them?  THESE are your initial goals.  You need to break up your big goals up into smaller, more manageable pieces.

When you have small, achievable goals, not only are you going to have a higher success rate at achieving them, it’s going to give you momentum emotionally to continue creating and achieving more goals.  When you get into the pattern of creating and achieving your goals, this is when your business starts to take off…and the money follows.

The trap that people usually find themselves in is that they have created such a large goal that they have no idea how their going to achieve this goal. Then they get overwhelmed at the enormity and start making excuses as to why they aren’t moving forward in their business.  This is very common and predictable in people.  Try very hard to not fall into this goal setting trap!

So, when setting goals, make sure you take this information and apply it today:

Take a look at your ultimate goal. Break this goal up into smaller, short term goals.  Make a list of each of the smaller, short term goals that need to be accomplished in order to achieve the ultimate goal.  Make sure you can achieve these smaller goals in short periods of time – 2 to 4 weeks is best.  Once you achieve each short term goal, congratulate yourself and cherish the moment, and then start on the next goal on your list.  Remember all these small goals are leading up to your one big goal of major success!

If you follow theses step of setting goals correctly, you’ll find yourself moving forward in your business endeavors.  If you’re looking to move forward and being able to create 20K per month with a specific business plan, visit my “Step by Step To Internet Success” marketing blueprint to see how I’ve been setting goals which have allowed me to quit my job and stay home with my  little girls using these exact same techniques.
