MLM Time Management-5 Strategies To Keep Your Business Running Smoothly

Working from home can be a double edge sword.  There are so many reasons for wanting to work from home, and each person’s reason is different. Yet once you are able to lose the commute and work from your home, you’ll find that new distractions can arise.

Working from home makes it easy to do, however it is also so easy NOT to do.  The normal distractions of home life can be hard to overcome, as you begin to focus on the opportunity at hand. This is why it is imperative to have a time management plan put in place that works for you.

Here are 5 MLM time management strategies that will help you stay focused to build a successful business from home.

1. Plan Your Week – First define what your work week will be. Some people choose to work a regular Monday – Friday work week. Others choose to pick random days during the week that fit their family schedule a little better. Others may even choose to work everyday, and weekends. Whichever works for you and your business, plan accordingly. Before you work week begins, take about an hour the evening before and plan your week. Figure out what important items need to get done (including household and family obligations) and write them down. Assign which day of the week these tasks need to get done. Then write down other tasks that aren’t pressing, yet need to get done. This way if you find yourself with a little downtime during the week, you can get started on these other tasks. Planning your week in advance helps you stay on task and get things done.

2. Block Out Your Day – Define the times when you will be actively working, and the times when you will be able to do “housekeeping” activities. Do not mix the two together if you can help it. While you are activity working (this task is different for every business owner) do not allow other distractions to come into play. Your time is better spent if you do one task at a time. Multitasking can be helpful, but most of the time it can prolong what you are ultimately trying to accomplish. Turn your email and phone off and concentrate on one specific task at a time. Then when it’s time, open up your email, and voice mails and follow up with those who need it. Blocking out your distractions will help in the long run.

3. Figure Out What Tasks Pay You –Make sure you are spending time on tasks that physically pay you. Many people working from home make the mistake of spending too much time “getting ready to get ready”. Make sure that the majority of your time is spent on activities that will actually earn you income. One way to keep this in check is to ask yourself from time to time: “Is what I’m doing right now actually going to get me paid?”

4. Figure Out Your Productivity Hours – Everyone is different, which also means that everyone works differently. If you are a morning person, you will do better starting off your day with your most important task that needs to get done. If it takes you awhile to get going in the morning, you might do better starting off with less important tasks before tacking your more important ones. Or maybe you’re a night owl who works best when the sun goes down. The benefit of working from home is that you can tailor your work style to what suits you best. Figure out what this is, and you’ll be more productive.

5. Keep a Balance Between Work and Home – The main reasons people want to work from home is because they want to work for themselves and spend more time with their family. The downside of working from home is there are no physical boundaries of work and home. Sometimes it is hard to disconnect from work because of this. However this is something you need to figure out. You need to give yourself permission to not work all the time. There needs to be a good balance between work and play. If you find yourself all the way over to either side, make a plan to balance it out.

Still trying to figure out if I am a morning person or not. I really like the “take care of the activities that pay you first.” What a great article to start out the new year Brenda. Looking forward to 2010.

I'm certainly not a morning person. I'm definitely a night person. However that doesn't work out too well when I have to get up early!

    Hi Brenda,
Thanks for the great tips and I’m definetly a morning person. The only problem is that
a lot of the teleconferences and webinars are at 9 – 10 PM EST and by then I’m wiped
    out.
wishing you a Happy & Prosperous New Year.

That’s true Charles, which works well for me, yet not for you! However most of the people doing the webinars record them and post for later viewing. If I miss one, I usually search around for the recorded version and watch it later. You may want to look into that.
