If you’re trying to brand yourself with your online marketing and build yourself a web presence, it can be a little daunting when you get started.
There’s so many people out in internet-land, how can “little ol’ you” get noticed? Well, I’m hear to tell you that it isn’t as hard as you may think.
The first thing you have to do is take a step back and look around at who YOU notice online. Who sticks out to you? Who do you follow? Who can you relate too? By taking notice of what makes an impression on you, this will help you create your own unique identity online.
We’ve all seen those people who have a “hook”. Some have a crazy out-there attitude. Some are laid-back, and never get frazzled. Some have extreme passion and it oozes into everything they do. But the one thing they have in common is that their online marketing is unique and authentic. The people who stand out online are the ones who are successful. If you don’t stand out online, then you become part of the “internet noise”.
No matter what business you are promoting online, your marketing is not going to work if it is not authentic. You can not go out there and pretend you are someone you’re not. People will see through it right away. So one thing NOT to do is find someone who is successful in the field you are working and copy exactly what they do. It WON’T work. You’re not them. Even if you say the exact same words they do…you’re results won’t be the same.
Now that’s not to say you can’t model yourself after them and follow along with the strategies that they are using. This method is something that will help you get over the learning curve of online marketing. However you need to put YOU into your marketing.
I’m New, I Don’t Have Any Kind Of Hook For Online Marketing!
This is something that hinders people indirectly. Just because you are new, doesn’t mean you don’t have instant value. You may not have the unique experience as a marketer, but you have skills that you have acquired over a lifetime of experiences. You need to tap into these specific skills and morph them info your own unique “hook” for your online marketing.
One of the quotes I heard explains this so well. It was said to me by Mike Dillard in his office in Austin Texas… “When people say your name, what do they say after it?” That is so powerful. Thing about that for a second. What do people associate you with? Do you know? Is it what you want? You can either build upon this, or change it if needed.
Here is an example to help you understand how this could apply to you: Let’s say you love working with kids. This is something that defines you. Take this info and spin it. If you like working with kids, then you have the ability to teach by breaking things down. You don’t take yourself too seriously, and you have a caring side to you. Use these skills to create your unique online marketing hook. You could begin by creating “How To” videos that people enjoy watching. They begin to see your value as you are helping them. Then the word starts to spread that you are someone who really knows what they’re doing…even if you’ve only been doing it for a few months! See how this can snowball if you’re being authentic?!
Once you realize what your personal skills are, then use these to create your own unique online marketing. Once you start to be yourself and gain confidence in what you are producing and how you are helping people, there’s no stopping the success your will have.
